A group of over 20 expats from the United States, France, Pakistan, Germany, Tajikistan, India, Brazil, Bangladesh, Ukraine and Colombia visited Haining, a county-level city in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, to experience the city's intangible cultural heritage item – leather sticker-making.
The stickers are made of cowhide, sheepskin and pig skin, which are left over from making leather clothing, leather shoes, bags and other leather goods.
In the past, these leftovers were discarded or incinerated, wasting resources and polluting the environment. When they are made into leather stickers, they become works of art, turning waste into value, said Xu Rong, a veteran craftsman of leather stickers.
The leather industry is one of three traditional pillar industries in Haining. A large amount of waste leather is produced every year. Haining leather stickers were created to promote the reduction and recycling of solid waste.
It is satisfying to use waste to make a beautiful Bing Dwen Dwen, said an expat from Tajikistan after making a leather sticker.
