A total of 35 hydrogen energy buses will soon be put into operation for bus routes 11 and 23 in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, local media reported on Feb 14.
Hydrogen energy buses are meant to help achieve the nation's goals of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.
The hydrogenated vehicles generate electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen ions. The vehicle uses about 6 kilograms of hydrogen every 100 kilometers. About 12 kilograms of hydrogen are needed per vehicle per day.
Conventional fuel cars release around 3 kg of carbon dioxide per liter of diesel. The use of hydrogen buses will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 50 metric tons per vehicle per year.
The city's first hydrogen refueling station - the Gangshan road comprehensive energy station – also opened on Feb 4.
The energy station offers 1,000 kg of hydrogen every day and is able to meet the daily hydrogen needs of 100 buses or 60 trucks.
It is also the first comprehensive energy station that integrates hydrogenation, gas filling and charging.
