Jiaxing promotes cultural preservation, utilization of Grand Canal
The week of June 22 every year is designated as the promotional week for the world cultural heritage of the Grand Canal in Zhejiang.
The Third Promotion Week of the World Cultural Heritage of the Grand Canal in Zhejiang, hosted by the city of Tongxiang in Jiaxing, kicked off in the ancient town of Shimen.
The cities of Hangzhou, Ningbo, Huzhou, Jiaxing and Shaoxing, all located along the Zhejiang section of the Grand Canal, have all held celebrations to showcase the cultural highlights of their respective cities along the canal since 2021.
The Zhejiang Grand Canal World Cultural Heritage Protection Alliance was officially established at the event. The cities of Hangzhou, Ningbo, Huzhou, Jiaxing and Shaoxing jointly issued an initiative to work together as promoters, maintainers and protectors of the Grand Canal.
Tongxiang has a total length of more than 2,400 kilometers of waterways on its 727 square kilometers of land. The oldest and most famous is the section of the Grand Canal that runs from west to east through the city, which accounts for more than one-eighth of the Zhejiang section of the Grand Canal.
This promotional week in Tongxiang included events such as the Grand Canal-themed Wang Shi oil painting exhibition and the joint exhibition of Grand Canal-themed photographs in five cities and 19 county-level cities, counties and districts along the Grand Canal.
