Jiaxing girl wins gold at Asian Games

Zhu Jin'er, a chess prodigy from Jiaxing, won gold in the women's individual chess competition at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sept 27. She finished all nine rounds of the fast chess match with seven points, beating 29 other players from 17 countries and regions.

The men's and women's individual chess competitions at the Hangzhou Asian Games were both nine-round Swiss system fast chess matches, with a time limit of 25 minutes per side and 10 seconds added per move.

Zhu Jiner, born in Jiaxing in 2002, started learning chess at the age of 4 and joined the national team at the age of 12.

She is currently ranked the 41st grand master (GM) in the world and the 10th female GM in China. She has won many national and international titles, including the World Youth Chess Championship for girls aged 14 in 2016, the National Chess Championship for women in 2019, and third place in the International Chess Federation Women's Grand Prix of 2023.

Zhu was selected for the women's individual and team events of the Asian Games with two first-place results in selection competitions over the past two years.

In addition, she was the fifth torchbearer of the Asian Games torch relay in Hangzhou.
