Jiaxing Port, a major port in Zhejiang province, has witnessed robust growth in its water transport economy in the first three quarters of this year, according to the Jiaxing municipal transportation bureau.

The port handled a total of 106 million metric tons of cargo and 2.53 million TEUs of containers from January to September, up 9.75 percent and 20.36 percent year-on-year, respectively, both ranking second in the province in terms of growth rate.

The port also handled 25.9 million tons of cargo via sea-river container shipments, and the container throughput of such shipments was 720,800 TEUs, up 11.09 percent and 26.05 percent year-on-year, respectively.

The port's performance in this period was mainly driven by three factors. First, the port cargo throughput maintained a relatively fast growth rate, reaching a record high of 13.33 million tons in March. Second, the foreign trade cargo throughput increased by 18.58 percent year-on-year, the highest among coastal ports in the province. Third, the port's container throughput continued to grow rapidly, with the second highest growth rate among ports in China.

Sea-river container shipment has been further developed in the city, as seven new shipping routes were added, bringing the total number of such route to 29. The ship capacity of sea-river container shipment was increased to 118 vessels.
