Jiaxing hosted the launch ceremony for the integration of expats' work permits and social security cards on Dec 3. This marks a major step in merging these essential documents for foreign workers in China.
The first integrated card, known as the "Join in Card", symbolizes the gathering of global talent. By loading work permit information onto the social security card, foreign employees can now use a single card for multiple services. This initiative aims to enhance China's appeal and competitiveness in the global talent market.
Stephen Fox, a researcher at Jinko Solar Co Ltd in Zhejiang, received the first Join in Card. Having lived and worked in Haining for 13 years, Fox expressed his relief at no longer needing to carry around multiple documents and the sense of belonging he feels.
In June, Zhejiang was designated as the pilot province for this new service, with Jiaxing as the trial city. The new card service allows for streamlined processes and online applications, reducing the need for physical paperwork.
As of October 2024, around 67,000 foreigners reside in Zhejiang, which is 24 percent more than last year. Shen Zhenning of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security highlighted the significance of this integration, noting Zhejiang's strong foundation in the "one-card" service will guide other regions to simplify the services foreign talents rely on.
