An Xiuzhou intangible cultural heritage exhibition from the Xiuzhou district of Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province opened at the Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Museum — located in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang, on May 29.
The exhibition, which runs through to June 2, aims to promote the idea of celebrating traditional festivals at intangible cultural heritage venues. It aims to deepen public understanding of the cultural and historical significance behind festivals through immersive displays.
The exhibition showcases the most representative intangible cultural heritage items across four zones in Xiuzhou, looking at the silk weaving techniques, intangible cultural heritage food accross China, as well as art and everyday craftmanship.
Highlights include 17 heritage food brands, silk products like scarves and quilts, and folk art which capture rural life and local flair of Jiangnan — the region along the southern bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
In terms of everyday craftmanship, it showcases paper-cutting, palm fiber weaving, embroidery items and more. Master artisans, including paper-cutting inheritor Luo Yao and palm-weaving expert Zeng Xiuquan, gave live demonstrations of their techniques.
In addition, a special Xiuzhou intangible cultural heritage experience area is inviting visitors of all ages to try hands-on activities such as making zongzi, a traditional Chinese delicacy made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
To top it off, the exhibition offers a fresh take on heritage, blending tradition with modern aesthetics.
As Zhejiang deepens its integration of intangible heritage with cultural tourism, the event marks another step in promoting Jiangnan's cultural legacy in the modern era.
