Haining adds 11 new bird species
Ahead of National Ecology Day on Aug 15, Haining, a county-level city in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, released its latest bird monitoring results, recording 11 new species, including three under national second-class protection.
From November last year to July this year, four surveys covering autumn migration, wintering, spring migration, and summer breeding were conducted. The surveys documented species composition, distribution, seasonal changes, and main threats.
In the latest survey, the bird survey team recorded 4,816 individual birds from 97 species in 14 orders, 40 families, and 74 genera. These included two national first-class protected species — the black-faced spoonbill and the Dalmatian pelican — and 10 national second-class species.
Since 2020, Haining has documented 196 species, with four national first-class and 32 national second-class species. Moreover, ongoing improvements in the city's ecosystem have turned it into a haven for many protected birds.
