Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province has decided to develop its nighttime economy, local media reported on April 8.
An action plan to develop the nighttime economy in Jiaxing was recently released by 14 local authorities, including the Jiaxing Municipal Development and Reform Commission.
Nighttime economy refers to business activities undertaken between 6 pm and 6 am in the service sector. It is a golden period for merchants seeking to expand their business.
The action plan states that Jiaxing will develop nighttime sightseeing, shopping, entertainment and fairs based at special pedestrian streets and famous stores.
In the following three years, the city will create a group of special pedestrian streets and more than 100 role model stores that are open late.
The pedestrian streets are encouraged to hold various festivals, such as shopping festivals, food festivals and beer festivals, and introduce branded restaurants, special snack stores, 24-hour bookstores, bars, fitness rooms, hairdressing stores, jewelry and jade stores, and tailor-made product stores.
Jiaxing will improve lighting facilities on main roads, pedestrian streets, iconic architecture, and main business districts, and increase night buses and routes as well.
The action plan also includes a selection of special blocks, famous restaurants, stores, and entertainment facilities that cater to nighttime consumers. The shortlisted places will receive up to 5 million yuan ($708,000) in financial awards.
