The No 4-7 berths in the Zhapu port area of Jiaxing Port, Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province are expected to start operating around the Spring Festival, which falls on Feb 1 this year.

That's after they reportedly got the green light from experts on Jan 13.

The berths are part of the second phase of the Zhapu port area and its construction started in March 2021. It includes eight berths, five of which are multi-functional berths and the remaining three are for petrochemicals vessels.

The No 4-7 berths are multi-purpose slots for 500-metric ton ships and will result in lower costs and energy consumption and less pollution from transit shipments.

With its reputedly unique advantages in terms of river and sea logistics, the Zhapu port area is the core of Jiaxing Port and connects to main inland waterways of northern Zhejiang. In recent years, the cargo throughput of Jiaxing Port has been growing rapidly with its throughput capacity reportedly often strained to breaking point.

The newly built berths are expected to further increase Jiaxing Port's throughput capacity and help it achieve a target of handling more than 5 million twenty-foot equivalent units annually by 2025, including 1.6 million TUEs via combined river-sea transportation.
