The first intelligent medical waste treatment equipment in China was put into operation in Jiaxing Haiyun Ziyi Environmental Protection Co Ltd, Haining, Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, on March 21, local media reported.

According to Chen Ning, product manager of Haiyun Ziyi, the intelligent robotic device allows for complete unmanned treatment of medical waste.

Chen added that the equipment has boosted the company's medical waste treatment capacity by another 100,000 metric tons per day and reduces treatment time by 24 percent.

To ensure the efficient treatment of medical waste related to the pandemic, a branch of the Jiaxing municipal bureau of ecological environment in Haining has established an online platform to share information about medical waste treatment plants and medical institutions and publish assessment results about the capacity of these treatment plants.

On March 11, Haining reported the first confirmed COVID-19 case at a centralized isolation station in Jiaxing. As of 8 am on March 23, there had been 12 confirmed cases in Haining, and 53 in Jiaxing.
