Jiaxing's ports see rise in container throughput in Jan-May

The container throughput of Jiaxing Port in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, saw an increase of 24.87 percent year-on-year from January to May, exceeding 1.08 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the highest growth rate among coastal ports in the province.

Foreign trade container throughput reached 193,400 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 12.14 percent, and more than 12.09 million metric tons of cargo was handled through sea-river combined transportation, an uptick of 3.31 percent year-on-year.

During this period, coal and related products were the main cargo transported via Jiaxing Port, and their throughput exceeded 20.37 million tons, accounting for 38.98 percent of the total.

Jiaxing Inland Port is mainly used for the transportation of containers, grain, salt and light industrial and pharmaceutical products.

From January to May, the container throughput of Jiaxing Inland Port expanded 38.2 percent year-on-year to 193,800 TEUs, the highest growth rate in the province. Container throughput in May was 45,000 TEUs, a 40.35-percent increase year-on-year.

Specifically, Jiaxing Harbor Service Co Ltd handled over 8.78 million tons in cargo throughput in May, rising 10.97 percent year-on-year, a record high for a single month and driving Jiaxing Port's cargo throughput to 11.93 million tons, up 3.75 percent.

In addition, in the first five months, container throughput at Jianshan wharf in Haining was 34,200 TEUs, a surge of 515.61 percent year-on-year.
