The groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction and expansion of the Jiaxing military and civilian airport was held on Nov 23 in Honghe town, Xiuzhou district, Jiaxing.

The construction includes a 3,400-meter-long and 50-meter-wide runway, a 25,900-square-meter terminal and a parking apron with 28 stands, receiving a total of 5.34 billion yuan ($534.9 million) in investment.

The airport is designed to handle 1.8 million passengers and 100,000 metric tons of cargo annually.

The airport is expected to be put into operation by 2025.

It will improve civil aviation transportation in the city and strengthen the city's transportation network.

Jiaxing has a solid industrial foundation, and leather, woolen sweaters and the electronic information industry will all make heavy use of air transport. The construction of the Jiaxing airport is also conducive to the city's participation in the cooperation and division of work among airports in the Yangtze River Delta region.

In addition, to turn itself into an important air cargo hub, Jiaxing has cooperated with YTO Express to build a YTO Jiaxing Global Air Logistics Hub near Jiaxing airport, promoting the development of regional air logistics.
