According to the municipal post office of Lishui city – in East China's Zhejiang province – during the Nov 11-17 Singles Day shopping festival this year, major express delivery companies in the city handled a record total of 10.45 million packages, with a year-on-year growth of 7.5 percent.

Officials said the delivery bonanza was clearly powered by the Singles Day online shopping spree which kicked off on Nov 11.

They said both the Lishui post office and the city's express delivery enterprises made adequate preparations for this year's extravaganza.

The Lishui branch of ZTO Express, one of China's major express-delivery companies, invested more than 2 million yuan ($304,521) to add fully automate its sorting equipment, which can sort 16,000 parcels per hour.

"In the past, one person could only send 200 parcels a day. With the automated equipment, each person can send an additional 100 to 150 parcels, which has greatly improved work efficiency," said Jiang Haoyang, the head of the company.

Lishui post office official Zhu Weiqiang said their operations were also efficient.

"During this year's Singles Day, we achieved the goals of ensuring smooth access, safety and stability," Zhu added.
