An exhibition in memory of the 100th anniversary of famous artist Li Zhenjian's birth opened on April 26 in the Zhejiang Art Museum – located in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province.

Li Zhenjian was a figure painter in the field of traditional Chinese painting, born in Jinyun county, administered by Lishui city in Zhejiang.

On show are some 100 paintings and sketches of figures and landscapes that stand as testaments to Li's devotion to modernizing traditional ink art over several decades.

Li's early interest in painting was encouraged by his parents, who sent him to local artists to learn the basic skills of Chinese painting.

In 1946 he entered the national school of art in Hangzhou – now the China Academy of Art – to receive professional training under the guidance of ink masters such as Pan Tianshou and Huang Binhong.

He also adopted a realistic approach from Western art, by which he was able to create dozens of lively figures from different social backgrounds.

The exhibition runs until May 26.
