New Year celebrations around Zhejiang

People in East China's Zhejiang province are busy preparing for the upcoming new year. Various activities are being staged around the province to show different but characteristic New Year's customs and to welcome a brand new beginning.

Rice cake making

As the lunar new year approaches, making rice cakes becomes a common activity in many villages in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, especially in Waitongwu Village which has a 600-year tradition of making the distinctive delicacy.

More than 80 residents from across the city gathered in the village on Dec 25 for the 6th rice cake festival. The annual event features a range of activities including demonstrations of rice cake preparation and the writing of Spring Festival couplets.

New Year's concerts

The New Year's concert in Taizhou, Zhejiang province was given by the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra at the cultural center on Dec 28. People in Taizhou enjoyed a multimedia performance of many famous musical works, including Blue Danube, The Red Detachment of Women and Waltz of the Flowers.          

Huzhou, another city in Zhejiang held a New Year's concert given by the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra on Dec 27 to welcome the upcoming 2017.

The 2017 Hangzhou New Year's concert was performed at the Hangzhou Grand Theater on the evening of Dec 30.
