Over 20 international students from Zhejiang Normal University experienced the handicraft tradition of woodcarving in Dongyang, a county-level city in Jinhua, Zhejiang province on July 10.
The students were taught the process of making a successful woodcarving product at a local workshop. The craftsman explained every detailed step to them, from holding the nicking tools appropriately to exerting the proper strength on different patterns.
With origins that date back as far as the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the craft of Dongyang woodcarving is regarded by many to be one of the most elegant forms of relief carving in the world. It was included on the first list of national intangible heritages in 2006.
