Known as "one of the greatest wood sculptors of the century", the Italian sculpture artist Bruno Walpoth has finally made his way to China, with his first solo exhibition in Asia kicking off in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, on Nov 29.
Following a release of a series of lectures and a new book that came out on Nov 25, the exhibition, titled "Silent Emotion", is set to display over 20 pieces of art, including paintings, paper sculptures, copper sculptures as well as a wooden sculpture that was specifically based on a girl in Hangzhou.
A video photographing the artist's creation process will also be on show.
Hailing from a family of wood sculptors, Bruno Walpoth honors a centuries-old tradition and modernizes it for the 21st century. He carves life-sized human figures from blocks of wood, and finishes the sculptures with acrylic paint. Drawing inspiration from late Gothic and early Renaissance Italian wood sculpture, the expert emphasizes human sensibility over form.
The exhibition runs till Dec 23.
