Practical experiences of Chinese youth participating in the construction of biodiversity-friendly towns have been included in the initiative released by the 24th China-Japan-ROK Environment Ministers' Meeting (TEMM) Youth Forum.
The forum, which concluded on Nov 4, is a parallel event held during the annual China-Japan-ROK Environment Ministers' Meeting. This year, it was titled "Harmonious Coexistence with Nature: Inspiring Education for the Future."
Jiang Feng, a member of the Chinese delegation and representative from Haishu, Ningbo, Zhejiang province, shared the story of how he and his partners implemented the concept of ecological civilization and participated in the construction of biodiversity-friendly towns, and had discussions with their participating counterparts.
The experience drawn from how the young people participated in and contributed to the construction of the Ningbo Mountain Botanical Garden was included in the forum's initiative and submitted to the report of TEMM24.
Two years ago, Jiang, then a fresh university graduate, started his work in Longguan, a town in Haishu district of Ningbo, which is dedicated to becoming a biodiversity-friendly town. Located at the eastern foothills of Siming Mountain, the town is extremely biodiverse. Local villages have explored measures such as developing ecological industries, advocating pro-nature life, protecting the original ecology, and embodying inclusive governance.
Since the launch of the project, local authorities have given full play to the role of young people and planned a variety of youth activities to practice and spread the concept of biodiversity-friendliness.
"I feel very proud to be able to showcase the efforts of Haishu's youth in protecting biodiversity internationally," Jiang said.
TEMM is an annual environment ministerial meeting initiated in 1999 and alternately held in China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
