Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe celebrates sixth Plum Blossom Award win

Chen Lili from Zhejiang Wuju Opera Art Research Institute (Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe) in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, claimed the 32nd China Theatre Plum Blossom Award at a ceremony in Shanghai on May 21, becoming the sixth performer from the troupe to earn this honor.

Chen, a student of renowned Wuju Opera artist Chen Meilan, presented her virtuosity during a performance on May 10 at Shanghai's Yifu Theater. She performed three opera highlights, showcasing three diverse vocal styles of Wuju Opera and her mastery of stage arts as well as the charm of Wuju Opera.

In one of the opera highlights, Chen transformed into the renowned legendary heroine Mu Guiying, blending martial arts and singing, which won raucous applause from the audience.

A dedicated huadan (vivacious female role) performer, Chen has honed her craft through rigorous training and diverse performances, from simple village stages to global cultural exchanges. Her win not only honors her artistic excellence but also marks a milestone in the preservation and development of Zhejiang's Wuju Opera.

Jinhua native Bao Chenre from the Taizhou Luantan Opera Troupe also secured the award this year. Up to now, Zhejiang has produced 44 Plum Blossom Award winners (49 total accolades), ranking top nationwide.
