Film and television professionals from over a dozen countries, including the United States, Uruguay, France, Australia, and South Africa, visited Hengdian World Studios in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, on May 25 to discuss global short drama production and cross-cultural partnerships.
The delegation toured Hengdian's cutting-edge facilities, where South African actor and scriptwriter Adriaan Johannes was impressed by the virtual filming technology that allows instant scene-switching. After seeing the extensive resources and integration of digital media technologies, he expressed interest in shooting his project in Hengdian.
Organized in part by Dalynn Studio, the event aimed to share knowledge about China's film hub. "The future lies in mobile and short-video content. Short dramas present massive opportunities," said Dalynn founder Mary Lynn, emphasizing the goal to promote international understanding and co-production.
Participants observed the filming of a short drama at the Chinese Cultural Park in Hengdian World Studios, which tailored dozens of versatile sets in 2023 for various genres, ranging from period fantasy to modern romance.
Tang Hupo, co-initiator of the Hengdian International Short Drama Alliance, highlighted Hengdian's complete film and television cultural industry value chain and supporting facilities. He noted that filming a short drama in Hengdian costs as little as $100,000 compared to $150,000 to $200,000 in North America.
Hengdian is addressing challenges for foreign crews, such as providing authentic international sets and international casting, said Guo Shu, international business manager of Hengdian World Studios.
Hengdian received over 1,190 short drama crews in 2024, and this year the number had already surpassed 1,200 by mid-May. According to Guo, delegations from Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia are expected to visit for exchanges in the future.
