Zhejiang's economy shows steady growth in May

The economy of East China's Zhejiang province continued to show stable growth, according to data released by the Zhejiang Provincial Bureau of Statistics on June 20.
From January to May, total retail sales of consumer goods reached 1.55 trillion yuan ($215.64 billion), up 5.3 percent year-on-year. In May alone, retail sales rose 7.2 percent to 338.4 billion yuan, 1.8 percentage points higher than in April. Goods retail totaled 305 billion yuan, up 6.9 percent.
Total imports and exports from January to May hit 2.24 trillion yuan, a 6.5 percent increase. Exports grew 9.6 percent to 1.69 trillion yuan, while imports declined 2.2 percent to 550 billion yuan. Zhejiang accounted for 12.5 percent of China's total trade, including 15.9 percent of exports and 7.5 percent of imports.
Private enterprises remained the main driver, contributing 1.83 trillion yuan — or 81.7 percent — of total trade, up 8 percent year-on-year. The number of foreign trade firms rose to 106,000, an increase of 6.8 percent.
Freight transport volume in May reached 330 million metric tons, up 6.5 percent, with road and waterway freight growing by 6.9 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively. Freight turnover rose 10 percent to 149.2 billion ton-kilometers.
Passenger transport reached 54.6 million trips in May, up 4 percent, with railway travel rising 8.8 percent. Passenger turnover rose 4.3 percent to 8.97 billion passenger-kilometers.
