The Hangzhou stop of the 2025 Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Canoe Marathon Series and the inaugural Hangzhou Canoe Open launched at Wulinmen Pier in Gongshu district on June 28.

Nearly 500 water sports enthusiasts from across China gathered for a two-day aquatic spectacle on the historic canal.

This year's event is larger than previous years, with solo ocean kayak races (200 meters, 5 kilometers, 10 km) now offered in open, masters, and student divisions. Athletes aged 14 to 63 raced along a scenic route lined with iconic bridges, blending natural beauty with the canal's rich maritime heritage.

New highlights include a popular paddleboard category and public participation events — allowing even beginners to get on the water. For the first time, the open race took place on the canal's main shipping channel, reflecting a bold step in integrating heritage with fitness.

Alongside the races, the debut of the lucky market — a local sports-themed fair — added to the festive atmosphere. With fitness tech demos, licensed merchandise, and traditional crafts, the event bridged history and modernity, turning Hangzhou's canal into a living celebration of sports and culture.
