Zhejiang's online literature leads China's cultural exports boom
China-produced Online literature, micro dramas, and video games have been increasingly popular in the overseas market.
In 2024, China's online literature export market surpassed 5 billion yuan ($696.93 million), with over 350 million overseas users. The global micro-drama market topped $15 billion, with Chinese productions accounting for more than 80 percent of the market. Meanwhile, overseas sales of Chinese-developed video games grew 13.39 percent year-on-year.
Zhejiang province has committed to advancing this trend by promoting the global expansion of these three cultural forms.
Zhejiang is at the forefront of China's online literature push.
Located in the Binjiang district of Hangzhou, the China Internet Writers Village has become a cradle for some of the country's most prominent digital storytellers.
Since its establishment in 2017, the village has grown from a small collective into a thriving community of more than 300 writers, many of whom are among China's top online authors.
One standout case is The Bad Kids, a suspense novel that has been translated into English, Burmese, Persian, and Swahili. It has reached global audiences through online reading apps, audio dramas, short videos, and promotional trailers.
