Morning runs brew community spirit in Ningbo

In Ningbo, Zhejiang province, a morning run now comes with a cup of coffee and a dose of community spirit.

At Anfeng community in the city's Haishu district, residents have found a new reason to get moving. Anyone under 60 who runs 5 kilometers, and seniors who walk 10,000 steps, can redeem a cup of coffee for just 1 yuan ($0.14). The program has quickly become a local favorite, attracting neighbors of all ages who cheer each other on, share tips, and enjoy friendly conversations while staying active.

The coffee has a deeper story. Every cup is handcrafted by disabled trainees from the community service center. Since July, these trainees have received professional coffee training, learning everything from espresso basics to frothing milk.

"Our goal is to help trainees learn a skill and feel included in the community," said Chen Saihua, project lead at the center. Many trainees have transformed from hesitant beginners to confident baristas. One formerly nonverbal trainee now hands coffee to residents with a smile, and the "thank you" he receives gives him a deep sense of pride.

The program also strengthens social ties and community engagement. Residents exchange tips, compare fitness app readings, and encourage each other, while trainees gain hands-on experience and confidence. A 21-day fitness program complements the coffee initiative, offering exercise guidance and nutrition advice to participants.

Looking ahead, organizers plan to open a community cafe, providing ongoing employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for trainees. By combining fitness, skill-building, and neighborly connection, Anfeng community has made a simple morning run a daily ritual celebrating effort, kindness, and growth.
