Over 20 Chinese and international students from Ningbo University recently spent a day in the rice fields of Jiangshan town, Ningbo, experiencing traditional farming first-hand as part of the Walking Cultural Classroom program.
Guided by local farmers and volunteers, the students learned the full cycle of rice harvesting. They cut and bundled stalks under careful instruction, threshed grains using traditional wooden boxes, and gathered stray ears, gaining an appreciation for the effort behind each harvest. This hands-on experience offered them a tangible connection to rural life and the hard work that sustains food production.
"This is my first time harvesting rice myself. It's incredible to experience something I've only seen in documentaries," said Moroccan student Dagana Manal. Many students echoed the sentiment, noting that the activity deepened their understanding of Chinese agricultural culture and the value of hard work.
The program also incorporated lessons on local farming traditions and ethics, including storytelling and discussions of historical family teachings that promote diligence and integrity.
Ningbo University staff emphasized their plans to expand the initiative, aiming to create more opportunities for students to engage with rural communities, explore cultural heritage, and cultivate a hands-on understanding of agriculture while promoting awareness of Chinese traditions.
