Industry overview
Shaoxing is an industrial city in East China's Zhejiang province that, since China's reform and opening-up started in 1978, has formed an industrial system led by four emerging industries – high-end equipment, modern medicine, new materials and electronic information. These are supported by three traditional industries – textiles, chemicals and metal processing – and have featured the two historic classical industries of yellow rice wine and pearls.
At present, Shaoxing's manufacturing industry is in a critical period of transformation and development. Under the support of the provincial Party committee and government, Shaoxing was listed as a pilot city for upgrading traditional industries in Zhejiang, and has identified five key industries – textiles, chemicals, metal processing, yellow rice wine and pearls.
The city is striving to build itself into the world's leading textile fabric innovation base, a high-performance dye research and development base, a nationally important high-end metal processing base and nationally renowned pearl culture industry base. It also plans to become the "fashion textile capital" and "world yellow rice wine capital" after three to five years.
At the same time, Shaoxing has made great efforts to cultivate and develop the four emerging industries, aiming to create a green and high-end modern industrial system with Shaoxing characteristics.
