Shaoxing's new materials industry has solid scale and foundation, and mainly covers new textiles, new chemicals and new metals. The city is the largest chemical fiber fabric production base in Asia, its main products being polyester chips, polyester filaments, staple fibers, spandex, nylon, chemical fibers and elastic silk.

A number of enterprises, such as Zhejiang Guxiandao Green Fiber and Zhejiang Jiaren New Materials, are accelerating their expansion into ecological green renewable fibers and high-tech fibers, of which Guxiandao's polyester industrial fiber has captured for more than 20 percent of the national market share.

The city's chemical industry has formed six subsectors: basic chemical raw materials, pesticides, dyeing (coating) materials, synthetic materials, special chemicals, and chemicals for daily use. The industry has advantages in dyes, synthetic materials, special chemicals, daily chemicals and other aspects, with a number of leading backbone enterprises such as Zhejiang Longsheng Group and Zhejiang Huangma Technology. Huangma Technology produces special surfactant and chemical fiber oil agent with the largest production scale and the most complete variety in China.

In 2018, Shaoxing had 289 new material enterprises above the designated scale – annual sales revenue surpassing 20 million yuan ($2.85 million) – with output value of 112.49 billion yuan, accounting for 16.6 percent of the industries above the designated scale in the city.
