With a history of more than 2,500 years, Shaoxing is known as a land of mountains and rivers and historical relics, and a place where famous people gather together. It has jurisdiction over Yuecheng district, Keqiao district, Shangyu district, Zhuji city, Shengzhou city and Xinchang county, with an area of 8,279 square kilometers and a population of 5.03 million.

In 2019, Shaoxing's GDP reached 578.1 billion yuan ($81.53 billion), which was 7.2 percent higher than that of the previous year in terms of comparable prices, and the growth rate was 0.4 percentage points higher than the average of the whole province and ranking fifth in Zhejiang. The annual fiscal revenue was 82.5 billion yuan, up 1.7 percent year-on-year, of which 52.8 billion yuan was in the general public budget, up 5.4 percent.

Imports and exports of goods totaled 245.9 billion yuan in 2019, an increase of 9.8 percent year-on-year. Of this, exports totaled 225.1 billion yuan, up 10 percent, and imports totaled 20.8 billion yuan, up 7.1 percent.

In terms of trading mode, the import and export of processing trade was 14.2 billion yuan, while that of general trade was 230.5 billion yuan, and that of other trade was 1.21 billion yuan. There were 215 import and export countries and regions. The imports and exports with countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) totaled 104.7 billion yuan, up 17.2 percent year-on-year.

The imports and exports of services totaled 14.1 billion yuan, an increase of 12 percent year-on-year, of which exports of services totaled 11 billion yuan, up 16.1 percent. Services exported to BRI countries and regions totaled 3.1 billion yuan.
