Nealy 100 million residents in Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province, have received booster vaccine injections so far as the new COVID-19 variant Omicron emerged in northern Chinese city of Tianjin, local healthcare authorities announced on Jan 14.

"Over the past few days, about 600 people volunteered to get vaccinated every day", said a staff member at the Mashan community service center in Yuecheng district.

Statistics show that 11.51 million inoculations had been made in Shaoxing by Jan 10. More than 4.5 million adults and 371,100 children aged between 3 and 11 in the city have received full-course vaccinations.

Experts said that vaccination is still the most effective means to prevent the COVID-19 virus no matter what kind of variant emerges.

The Shaoxing authorities are also calling for residents to be inoculated vaccines against COVID-19 as soon as possible to realize herd immunity.
