The Hangzhou 19th Asian Games Torch Relay made its way to Shaoxing on Sept 11.

A total of 170 torchbearers relayed the torch from the former residence of Lu Xun (1881-1936) to the Shaoxing Olympic Sports Center, unveiling the rich cultural heritage and modern cityscape of Shaoxing along the 9.7-kilometer route.

The first torchbearer, former Chinese women's volleyball head coach Yu Juemin, took the torch and ran the first 50 meters at the Shaoxing stop.

Five years ago, Yu returned to his hometown of Shaoxing to serve as a volleyball coach. His innovative approach to integrating sports and education has propelled Shaoxing volleyball to the top of the province.

"I hope that the torch relay inspires more young people to embrace volleyball," Yu said. "We welcome all Asian athletes to Shaoxing for competition and exploration!"

"My grandfather, Lu Xun, dedicated his entire life to upholding the 'torch' of national spirit. The Asian Games Torch Relay starting from his former residence, symbolizes his spirit," commented Zhou Lingfei, the third torchbearer and Lu's grandson.

At around 11:18 am, the final torchbearer, Paralympic swimming champion and Shaoxing native Jiang Yuyan, arrived at the torch extinguishing ceremony held at the Shaoxing Olympic Sports Center.

Shaoxing is the co-host city with the most event offerings in this edition of the Asian Games. It will host complete competitions for three events, including baseball, softball, and climbing, as well as group stage matches for basketball and volleyball. It will also provide training facilities for soccer events.
