Shaoxing has seized the opportunity presented by the Hangzhou Asian Games to try to become the "City of Sporting Events," local media reported on Sept 25.

From 2020 to 2022, total sports consumption in the entire city increased from 13.57 billion yuan ($1.86 billion) to 16.34 billion yuan. Per capita sports consumption for residents rose from 2,574.9 yuan to 3,053.76 yuan, marking a 9.35percent year-on-year growth. The proportion of per capita sports consumption to per capita expenditure reached 7.56 percent.

Rural residents saw their per capita sports consumption rise to 2,493.07 yuan, an annual increase of 31 percent, while urban residents' per capita sports consumption reached 3,124.7 yuan, approaching the levels seen in high-income European and American countries.

In an effort to continually expand grassroots fitness activities, Shaoxing allocates 1.5 million yuan annually to support 100 grassroots units, including rural areas, communities, and businesses, in promoting sporting events.
