Zhou Jindi, deputy president of the Shangyu Wild Bird Protection, recently stumbled upon a rare bird – the Taiwan Barbet, or Psilopogon nuchalis – in the scenic Shangyu tidal flat in Shangyu district, Shaoxing.

This is the first time a Taiwan Barbet has been spotted in the city, casting a mesmerizing spell on bird aficionados and nature enthusiasts alike.

The Taiwan Barbet is small in size but boasts an exquisite color palette. This avian gem is cloaked in a lush emerald green plumage and embellished with a kaleidoscope of red, blue, yellow, orange, and black from shank to crown, resembling a living painting.

With its discerning environmental demands, this winged wonder serves as an eloquent testament to the success of ecological conservation initiatives in the Shangyu tidal flat.

As part of the migratory route for Siberian avifauna, Shangyu hosts a multitude of migratory birds seeking refuge during the winter months every year. To safeguard these beautiful creatures, the diligent personnel of the Shangyu Wild Bird Protection Association have made tireless efforts.

Their daily regimen includes fastidiously preparing a diverse array of sustenance for the birds, coupled with stringent water level controls in local ponds, ensuring an environment conducive to the winter sojourn of migratory birds.
