The Shaoxing Ancient City Heritage Innovation Center was inaugurated in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, on July 15 to support the city's bid for UNESCO World Heritage status.

This center is a collaborative effort between the Shaoxing municipal government and the World Urban Planning Education Network, aimed at becoming a global hub for experts in ancient city preservation.

The center aims to gather top global academicians and experts in ancient city protection and development, fostering interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration to drive innovation. By incorporating modern technology and innovative ideas, the center aims to enhance the preservation and cultural influence of the ancient city.

After the inauguration ceremony, 33 experts were appointed to the second advisory committee for the protection and utilization of the ancient city. These experts will act as a think tank, offering intellectual support for decision-making, planning, projects, and the world heritage application process of Shaoxing's ancient city area.

The history of Shaoxing stretches back 5,000 years to the earliest settlements in China. Sitting on the southern banks of the Qiantang River, it was once home to the Neolithic Hemudu Culture.

During the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), when seven battling clans fought for dominance, Shaoxing was the capital of the state of Yue. Later, during the Song Dynasty (AD 420-479), it was the main economic, political, and cultural center of southern China.

Guided by the goal of UNESCO World Heritage status, Shaoxing follows principles of "historical authenticity, the integrity of appearance, and continuity of life". Efforts include clearing foundations, refurbishing structures, removing decayed elements, reinforcing stone pillars, and paving with bluestone. These initiatives aim to create the "Shaoxing Model" for ancient city protection and utilization.
