Shaoxing was among nine Chinese cities recognized as a Biodiversity Charming City during the 8th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities, a parallel event of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The announcement highlights Shaoxing's achievements in biodiversity conservation and its commitment to global sustainability goals.

In recent years, Shaoxing has systematically balanced ecological preservation with high-quality socio-economic development.

Initiatives include comprehensive environmental management, improved ecological quality, and community-driven conservation efforts. The city supports this framework with a biodiversity observation network that includes 29 nature reserves, forest parks, and wetlands, alongside 61 biodiversity monitoring sites.

Home to 4,781 documented species — including 2,249 higher plants, 298 bird species, and 685 insect species — Shaoxing's conservation model serves as a blueprint for integrating biodiversity preservation with urban development.
