Zhan Chunpei, captain of an ocean-going public service vessel under the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, has been awarded the IMO Gender Equality Award 2025 at the 133rd session of the International Maritime Organization Council.

Born in Zhuji, Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, Zhan is the first female captain of an ocean-going public service vessel in China.

The IMO commended Zhan for her significant contributions to promoting gender equality in the maritime sector. Her efforts include advocating for employment opportunities for women in maritime roles and engaging in public outreach to inspire the younger generation to join the maritime industry.

After graduating from Shanghai Maritime University in 2013 with a degree in navigation technology, Zhan joined the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration and began her career on board. In 2014, she served as a third officer trainee during the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean, demonstrating courage and dedication early in her career.

Over the past decade, Zhan has participated in more than 20 major maritime rescue missions, including the emergency response to the Sanchi oil tanker explosion.

Zhan encourages women interested in maritime careers to take up the challenge. She believes that with increasing opportunities for female seafarers on various ships, women are fully capable of excelling on the sea.
