Yueju Opera show opens in Shaoxing
The 23rd Yueju Opera Showcase opened in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, on May 10 with a performance of the star-studded version of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. The opera — often described as the "Eastern Romeo and Juliet" — brought a rich cultural atmosphere to the opening of the three-month event.
Since its launch in 2003, the Yueju Opera Showcase has become a signature cultural event in Shaoxing. Throughout the city, from stone bridges to ancient rooftops, the charm of Yueju Opera — elegant, lyrical, and expressive — will be felt in daily life.
The performance of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, first staged in 2008, marked a turning point in Yueju's popularization, as it toured nationwide and overcame barriers of dialect and region.
Its influence extended beyond China, with performances in France, the United States, Canada, Romania, New Zealand, and Australia. The production introduced international audiences to the emotional depth and unique aesthetics of Yueju.
Supported by national media coverage and strong public interest, the opera became a cultural ambassador for Zhejiang. The 2025 showcase runs until July 20, featuring performances, workshops, and forums aimed at promoting Yueju as both a traditional and evolving art form.
