The Yueju Opera film Qiu Jin premiered in Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province on Nov 8. The screening commemorated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Qiu Jin, a revolutionary pioneer.
The film traces Qiu's transformation from a talented woman confined to her boudoir to a fearless revolutionary. Told from the perspective of her close friend Wu Zhiying, it depicts her journey of breaking feudal restraints, founding Chinese Women's News, and joining forces with figures such as Xu Xilin and Wang Jinfa to organize uprisings before her ultimate heroic sacrifice.
Filmed in Shaoxing, the movie features many of the city's cultural landmarks, including Donghu Lake, and Shenyuan Garden. The integration of Shaoxing's scenic landscapes and historical atmosphere enhances the viewing experience and highlights the city's rich cultural heritage.
Qiu Xia'ou, Qiu's grandnephew, attended the premiere and said Qiu's courage and ideals have long inspired their family. He noted that the film's artistic storytelling style helps audiences better understand and remember Qiu's enduring spirit.
The film serves as a tribute to one of Shaoxing's most iconic historical figures and reflects the city's efforts to promote the integration of Yueju Opera, cultural tourism, and patriotic education.
