The first domestic virtual film production base, Versatile AI Virtual Film Base, opened in Deqing county, Huzhou, Zhejiang province, on July 14.
The film base combines high standards, large scale, and a fully streamlined workflow, enabling filmmakers to complete the entire production process virtually, from scriptwriting to final shooting.
Spanning 100,000 square meters, the base is equipped with five LED virtual studios, two real-time preview studios, and a full range of supporting facilities. Several of its core techniques set new records in Asia and even globally.
One of the LED virtual studios measures 50 meters in diameter, making it the largest of its kind in the world. It is 5,000 square meters and features a 270-degree curved screen built from 26,600 LED panels, with a total resolution of 600 million pixels. This studio is specially designed to support high-quality production of films and TV series.
The documentary Kingdom of Wuyue was filmed at this film base. With the help of its curved LED screens, the team could accurately recreate historical scenes without relying on traditional real-scene shooting.
Liu Jin, winner of the Best Director Award at the Shanghai TV Festival Magnolia Awards, said that virtual shooting technology has brought great convenience to TV drama production. It allows the entire process from acting to production to be completed within a single studio.
During the signing ceremony, Bank of Hangzhou launched a funding plan worth 1 billion yuan ($139.3 million) to support film and TV projects produced at the base. The base also announced a partnership with the School of Film Art at the China Academy of Art.
