The Ning Yuan Dian Kun, the first 740-standard-container pure electric cargo ship built for Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co Ltd, was launched in Jiangxi province on Sept 29.
The launch marks the completion of hull construction and installation of the core power system for the world's largest and China's first pure electric seagoing cargo ship, signaling that the project has entered a new stage ahead of final delivery and operation.
The 740-standard-container pure electric ship project is a key initiative by Ningbo Ocean Shipping to promote green and low-carbon transformation in maritime transport. Each of the two vessels under construction measures 127.8 meters in length, 21.6 meters in width, and 10.5 meters in depth, with a draft of 6.2 meters and a capacity of 742 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). They are the largest pure electric container ships of their kind currently under construction worldwide.
The vessels are powered by 10 modular battery containers that support both high-voltage shore charging and quick battery replacement, enabling zero emissions throughout navigation, berthing, and cargo handling. They are also equipped with an intelligent integrated platform and smart engine room system, offering autonomous navigation in open waters, real-time 360-degree monitoring, all-weather visual perception, route planning, unmanned operation, autonomous collision avoidance, and adaptive driving modes.
The Ning Yuan Dian Kun has completed hull assembly and pre-launch outfitting. According to the construction schedule, the shipyard will next conduct dock outfitting, mooring trials, and sea trials, with delivery expected in early 2026.
Ningbo Ocean Shipping currently operates 29 green and energy-efficient vessels, accounting for 54.7 percent of its owned fleet. The company said the new vessels will further strengthen its commitment to sustainable and intelligent shipping development.
